INEQUALITY AND DISCRIMINATION

by Nicolas and Jean

In theory women can do the same sports as men. But in real life it is wrong.

In the 19th century only aristocrat women practised sports like golf, tennis...in the first half of the 20th century women started doing sports but they were not accepted. They had to wear long costumes to cover their body. Pierre de Coubertin didn't want to let them participate in the Olympic Games because he said their place was at home with their children.

Women participated for the first time in the Olympic Games in 1900. There were 22 women and

975 men. They  can play golf or tennis only. Charlotte Cooper et Margaret Abbott were the first women to win a gold medal.

The working women of the second half of the 20th century did not have time to do sport.

Even today it is very difficult to enter this men's world. the female football matches or rugby matches are not on TV programmes and the media prefer sportsmen.

and the publicity on TV show more men than women. If sportswomen want to be spotted they have to wear sexy sports clothes. This is the price to pay to do competitions!
