Marianne, the Symbol of Liberty

This painting by Eugène Delacroix is called " Liberty Leading the People,was painted in 1830 to celebrate the 1789 Revolution.

It represents Marianne as a symbol of Liberty and Democracy.

Marianne is a significant republican symbol, opposed to monarchy, and an icon of freedom and democracy against all forms of dictatorship.

She is represented on postage stamps, on French Euro coins and many other official documents.

She is also represented on statues that we can see in theTown Halls and law courts.

Later, the Revolutionaries adopted her red cap and it became a symbol of their Revolution.
