With a surface of 10 million km², Europe is the smallest continent. Its borders have changed continuously over the centuries.

And today, what is Europe like?

The population

Europe concentrate  a numerous population: Its population is about 508 million inhabitants as regards the European Union, 742 million if we include Central and Eastern Europe.

The human influence is partially reflected in the map above. Western Europe is more populated due to the Industrial revolution in the 19th century. Europe has an average density of 72 Inhabitants/ kilometers². The city network is there also very dense.

Europe offers a huge variety of languages of different origins ( Greek, Latin, German, Romanian...). English is widely learnt across Europe and is a good means to get to learn each other's cultural backgrounds.

The works of the European Union are translated into 11 official languages and the possibilities of translation represent more than 120 linguistic combinations during the European summits!

The languages

The religions

The religious membership can also establish a factor of division: it sharpens the ethnic or religious conflicts (Charlie Hebdo Mag and the terrorist attacks recently in Paris) as well as  in Yugoslavia or in Ulster Northern Ireland
